The Sports Column’s Most Widely Read Articles of 2019

,

In 2019, thousands of readers read articles written by ten TSC writers. Here’s a summary of who they are and what they wrote.

As we welcome 2020, it’s also time to celebrate 2019–in our case, to celebrate the authors who wrote the most widely read articles of the year. Here are the ten authors who topped the list.

Heading the list is Matthew Paris, who had four articles on our list. They included The Story Behind Nike’s Promo, ‘Finding Your Greatness,’ ‘The Punch’ Changed NBA Basketball, Brittany O’Neill’s Inspirational Story, and The Day Jim Rice Saved a Baseball Fan. Matthew has a knack for picking human interest stories that interest our readers.

Joe Platania, our erstwhile NFL beat reporter, had three articles on the list, topped by his Week 9 preview of the Ravens-Patriots game. Next came his picks for games played during NFL Week 5. Joe scored a double that week with his Week 5 preview of the Ravens-Steelers contest.

Football at a different level–college, that is–was ably covered in 2019 by Coleman Nowell. Two of Cole’s articles made the most-read list–his Week 6 predictions and his Week 9 predictions. (Cole finished the year by picking 80% winners straight-up.)

Another Cole–Cole Thaler–wrote a provocative piece about Derek Jeter, Is Derek Jeter the Most Overrated Athlete in American Sports History? That article ranked next on our list.

John Arcangelo’s piece was beyond provocative. It was downright controversial–even though it dealt with a topic that has plagued the NBA for years. Thousands of readers read his Is The NBA Rigged?

Kadin McElwain was one of TSC’s most prolific writers last year (over 100 articles written in 2019). Kadin writes most frequently about the music-sports interface. His most widely read piece in 2019 was an article on country music’s Brett Young: Brett Young Was Once a Baseball Star.

Mark Mothier does a great job writing about ‘old-time sports,’ the NFL in particular. One of his pieces, Joe Namath Overrated? Part 1, garnered plenty of attention.

I made the list again last year, but perhaps not for all the right reasons. Readers of my The Race to Save America’s Horses (a critique of the thoroughbred horsing industry) drew mostly positive responses early, and primarily adverse reactions later.

The Formula 1 scene is covered adeptly by Mark Gero, a veteran writer who has been following the sport for years. Of Mark’s many articles in 2019, his piece on issues at Ferrari topped the readership list: Problems at Ferarri Over?

Finally, I’m pleased to say that lacrosse coverage made the widely-read list for 2019. Jordan Johnson wrote a number of pieces on the pro side, and his article on the public relations/media side was his most-read contribution: RJ Kaminski, Becoming the Face of Lacrosse.

Thanks to these–and the hundreds of writers–who contributed to TSC in 2019. You make TSC possible! Keep ’em coming in 2020!

About Frank Fear

I’m a Columnist at The Sports Column. My specialty is sports commentary with emphasis on sports reform, and I also serve as TSC’s Managing Editor. In the ME role I coordinate the daily flow of submissions from across the country and around the world, including editing and posting articles. I’m especially interested in enabling the development of young, aspiring writers. I can relate to them. I began covering sports in high school for my local newspaper, but then decided to pursue an academic career. For thirty-five-plus years I worked as a professor and administrator at Michigan State University. Now retired, it’s time to write again about sports. In 2023, I published “Band of Brothers, Then and Now: The Inspiring Story of the 1966-70 West Virginia University Football Mountaineers,” and I also produce a weekly YouTube program available on the Voice of College Football Network, “Mountaineer Locker Room, Then & Now.”
