Sora Ends “Smash Ultimate” on a High Note

Super Smash Bros Ultimate, the popular MMA-style game that has complied 89 different fighters and over 200 games into one, has now come to an end. The final fighter to join an already impressive roster–Sora–was a surprise, including to me.

The trailer released today opens with all of the Smash Bros fighters staring at the burning Smash logo one, final time. Then, a small flame from the logo falls, and Mario walks up to it and tosses it. The flame then morphs into a key with the Mickey Mouse logo on it. Finally, a keyhole opens … and … in enters Sora.

Kingdom Hearts is a game franchise about Sora, our key-wielding hero, who travels throughout different Disney movie universes with the help of Donald Duck and Goofy, battling Heartless. The franchise has multiple notable titles, including the recent Kingdom Hearts Three, released in 2019. As expected, Nintendo made sure that little-to-no Disney items were in the character design for Sora. Sakurai, the developer, made it clear that anyone or anything from outside of the game world wouldn’t be in Smash.

Sora was an honorable mention on my list, and I didn’t think he’d get in because Disney can be a little picky about where their franchises go. Nevertheless, the key-wielding warrior is a fantastic way to end Smash on a high note.
