The 2026 Breeders’ Cup is taking shape around established champions, rising three-year-olds, and international stars. Contenders will gather at Keeneland in Lexington, KY, October 30-31 for racing across several divisions.
With major September preps already producing important results, the race picture is becoming clearer. With just over a month remaining, Forever Young, Sovereignty, Notable Speech and several other accomplished runners are emerging as prominent names ahead of the final fields.
“Forever Young” Returns as Champion
Forever Young enters the final stretch of the season with one of the strongest profiles in the Classic division. The Japanese star captured the 2025 Breeders’ Cup Classic and returned to the United States on September 18 for the Grade 1 Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont Park.

He delivered a convincing performance, finishing 3¼ lengths ahead of Stars and Stripes. The result improved his career record to 12 victories from 16 starts and pushed his earnings beyond $32 million. His connections are now preparing him for another appearance in the Classic.
For fans and bettors following Breeders’ Cup favorites for 2026, Forever Young’s recent form provides an important reference point when comparing the leading names. Betting markets can shift as final prep races, field decisions, and entries develop, so recent performances provide useful context alongside the available odds.
“Sovereignty” Remains a Major Drawcard
Sovereignty has also built a compelling 2026 profile. The reigning North American Horse of the Year returned to top form in the Grade 1 Whitney Stakes at Saratoga on August 8, finishing 4¾ lengths ahead of champion filly Nitrogen over 1 1/8 miles.
The performance earned Sovereignty an automatic place in the Breeders’ Cup Classic. It also added another major Saratoga result to a résumé that already included the 2025 Belmont Stakes, Jim Dandy, and Travers Stakes.
Key details from his season thus far include:
–A runner-up finish in the Oaklawn Handicap in April
— Third-place finish in the Stephen Foster in June
–A 4¾-length Whitney victory in August
–An automatic Classic berth through the Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series.
Sovereignty was expected to meet Forever Young in the Jockey Club Gold Cup but missed the race because of a foot abscess. His status will therefore remain an important storyline as Keeneland approaches.
“Notable Speech” Enhances the Mile Picture
The Mile division also has a familiar headline name in Notable Speech, whose 2026 campaign has strengthened considerably as the season has progressed.
Notable Speech won the Lockinge Stakes at Newbury in May before adding the City of York Stakes in August. Those performances demonstrated his effectiveness at different tracks and provided valuable information for horse racing analysis ahead of his return to North America. Then, on September 12, the five-year-old successfully defended his Grade 1 Woodbine Mile title. He settled behind the early pace before accelerating late to defeat Deterministic by 1¼ lengths, earning an automatic place in the Breeders’ Cup Mile.
Notable Speech also won the 2025 Breeders’ Cup Mile. His latest Woodbine performance therefore places an established defending champion at the center of another important Keeneland division.
Turf and Distaff Divisions Add Depth
The Breeders’ Cup picture extends well beyond the Classic and Mile. Several horses have already secured automatic places through major races in North America and Europe, creating depth across the Turf, Filly & Mare Turf, and Distaff divisions.
Among the notable names are:
–Kalpana: Won the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes before taking the Yorkshire Oaks
–Survie: Earned a Turf berth through the Grade 1 Christophe Clement Turf at Saratoga
–Gimme a Nother: Captured the E.P. Taylor Stakes at Woodbine on September 12
–Eunomia: Secured a Distaff berth by taking the Grade 1 Clement L. Hirsch at Del Mar
–Nitrogen: Earned a Distaff berth through the Grade 1 Ogden Phipps before finishing second to Sovereignty in the Whitney.
These runners illustrate the international scope of the championships. Their different routes to Keeneland also mean that recent form has been established across several surfaces, distances, and racing jurisdictions.
Possible Contenders Are Still Emerging
The final weeks before Keeneland provide opportunities for additional horses to strengthen their profiles. The Puma did exactly that on September 19 by capturing the Grade 1 Pennsylvania Derby at Parx Racing. The three-year-old defeated Further Ado by half a length after moving around the far turn. It was his first Grade 1 victory after earlier finishing second in the Florida Derby and fourth in both the Haskell and Travers.

Late-season prep races are especially important because they provide a final look at horses that developed later in the year or improved after the summer. A strong performance can bring another contender into the wider Breeders’ Cup discussion, even if that horse wasn’t considered a leading name earlier in the season.
These races also provide more information about how horses perform against stronger competition and under different race conditions. As connections settle on final championship targets, the makeup of individual divisions becomes clearer, and the major storylines heading into Keeneland begin to take shape.
Several factors will continue shaping the final fields:
–Results from the remaining Breeders’ Cup Challenge races
–Decisions about which championship division suits each horse
–Final entries and pre-race preparation, and
–Performances from international runners arriving later in the season.
The Challenge schedule still includes qualifying races in late September and October. That leaves room for established runners to confirm their places and emerging horses to enter the championship conversation.
A Strong Field Is Taking Shape
The 2026 Breeders’ Cup already brings together several distinct storylines. Forever Young is preparing to defend the Classic, Sovereignty has produced one of the summer’s standout dirt performances, and Notable Speech is returning after another major Woodbine success.
At the same time, horses such as Kalpana, Eunomia, Gimme a Nother, and The Puma are adding depth across the championship program. With several important races still ahead, the final weeks of preparation will determine exactly which leading names reach Keeneland in peak form.
