Does the NFL Hold Owners to the Same Accountability Level as it Does Players?

Doesn’t seem so. It’s not unusual for teams to cut or suspend players. In some cases, it becomes career-ending. Owners? We’ve had drug-related transgressions (e.g., ), and now a case of an owner seeking to engage a prostitute.

In August, San Francisco 49ers owner Jed York was arrested during a prostitution sting in East Palestine, Ohio. The Mahoning Valley Human Trafficking Task Force conducted the raid. York responded to an online ad under the fake name Joe and arranged a $140 cash meeting at the Wheat Hill Mobile Home Community.

York was caught by undercover agents, and the initial charges were engaging in prostitution and possession of criminal tools, which included his cell phone.

York pleaded no contest to misdemeanor charges and possession of felony tools. York was sentenced to one day in jail, fined $1,150, and ordered to complete an online course. The NFL suspended York for six games and fined him $500,000 for violating the league’s code of conduct.
