Surprise, surprise! Will the unexpected move pay dividends for the Giants and J.J.?
Coming out hot in Week 1, the New York Giants looked promising. The Giants looked ready to set the league ablaze with their new head coach, John Harbaugh, second-year quarterback Jaxson Dart, healthy Malik Nabers, and Cam Skattebo back and ready to run through a wall.

Unfortunately for New York, that fire was extinguished after major Week 2 injuries.
Dart suffered a season-ending torn MCL while Nabers went down with a shoulder injury. Jameis Winston stepped in with his trademark motivational attitude, but it wasn’t enough to ignite the Giants’ offense and secure a win on Monday Night Football.
With limited depth at quarterback, everyone in the league wanted to know: Who’s gonna step up?

To many fans and analysts’ surprise, J.J. McCarthy got that call.
The Giants acquired McCarthy from the Minnesota Vikings on Monday in exchange for a 2027 fifth-round draft pick. McCarthy appeared in 10 games for the Vikings in 2025, completing 140 of 243 passes for 1,632 yards, 11 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions.
McCarthy has yet to find his breakthrough in the NFL, but this move could spark something. He’s expected to spend the first few games learning the offense before potentially getting his chance on the field.
The Giants may have lost some of that flame in Week 2, but McCarthy has the chance to light it again. A change of scenery might be what this young quarterback needs to establish himself in this league, and the Giants hope to turn that flame into something more.
