WNBA Will Benefit from Record-Setting Interest in Women’s College Basketball

Big names–Caitlin Clark, Kamilla Cardoso, and Cameron Brink, among them–will be available in next Monday’s WNBA Draft.

The 2024 NCAA Women’s Basketball Final set a viewership record. Hopefully, that interest will translate into more attention toward women’s sports, including more attention to the WNBA.

The consistent play of two players caught my eye, and both will be featured prominently in the upcoming WNBA Draft–Iowa’s Caitlin Clark and South Carolina’s Kamilla Cardoso. Clark dazzled fans with her court vision and barrage of three-pointers, while Cardoso dominated in the paint.

Clark is projected to be drafted #1 overall by the Indiana Fever. If that selection comes to pass, she’ll be teamed up with Aliyah Boston, the 2023 WNBA and AP Rookie of the Year. Cardoso, who has proven she can dominate the interior offensively and defensively, displays hustle and endurance typically associated with a backcourt player. She is projected in most mock drafts as the #4 overall pick, going to the LA Sparks.

Cameron Brink, a 6’ 4” inside player and two-time PAC-12 POY who excelled for the Stanford Cardinal, is also expected to be a top pick in Monday’s draft. She could be selected either immediately before or after Cardoso.

Without question, the 2024 WNBA Draft will get more attention than at any other time in its history. There’s every reason to believe that fan interest will follow today’s college stars to the pros.
