Mark Coleman, UFC Fighter Turned Hero

, ,

You can say it was the biggest fight of his career.

Former UFC fighter Mark Coleman had a 16-10 record, seven knockouts, holds the record for the fastest win in the history of the PRIDE Fighting Championships, and is recognized for revolutionizing the “ground and pound” technique that would be used by the likes of Frank Trigg, Jon Jones, Chris Weidman, and Frank Shamrock, among others.

But on Tuesday, Coleman did something more heroic and brave than any fighting technique he could ever revolutionize.

In the early hours, the Toledo, OH, home of Coleman’s parents, caught fire with them inside. The fighter knew he had to act immediately. He immediately got his parents out of the house and ran back to save his dog, Hammer. Unfortunately, the dog didn’t survive, and to make matters worse, the roof collapsed, sending Coleman to the hospital in critical condition.

Wes Sims: “No one can tell a Mark Coleman story better than Mark Coleman! Please keep him in your prayers.” (as told to People Magazine)

I commend Coleman for his bravery and selflessness in the face of danger. These days, the sports world is filled with negativity, drama, and greed. But Coleman showed why it’s important to put the needs of others before your own. The world would be better if we had more people like Mark Coleman.

I will be praying for the Coleman family during this time. Let Mark Coleman’s story inspire us to be heroes.
