There’s the Standard Handshake, and There Are Special Handshakes

, ,

Welcome to the Art of The Handshake.

It’s individualized to fit the person extending it and/or to the circumstance. Here are examples from the NBA.

And it’s not just in sports these days. Friends greet friends or communicate in this special, if not unique, way.

To learn more about the evolution of “the handshake” in sports, I recommend viewing two NFL-related videos produced over the years. The first is The Art of the Handshake by NFL Rush (2017), and the second is the just-released The Art of the Elaborate Handshake by NFL Films. (I’d post both videos here, but by agreement, NFL-related videos on YouTube can’t be posted for general viewing. You can view them by clicking on the links.)

If you are lucky enough to be on the receiving end of an elaborate handshake–in sports or anywhere in life–that means you are special in the eyes of the person who extends it.
