HBCU National Tennis Championships on Tap in Mid-September

The 22nd annual edition will occur September 14-16 at the South Fulton Tennis Center in Atlanta.

Not just a tournament, the championships are a platform where HBCU schools compete and forge bonds as they vie for the prestigious title of National Champion. Over 15 schools and 250 players will play in singles and doubles matches in the men’s and women’s divisions.

The event’s significance can not be overstated because, as the U.S. Tennis Association’s Marisa Grimes Galiber put it, “For years, HBCUs provided a safe space for Black tennis players to thrive because they were not welcome in most tennis clubs and tournaments. So, it is important that we acknowledge that history of exclusion and celebrate the contribution of HBCUs to the sport and society at large.”

The HBCU National Tennis Championships will be preceded by another anticipated event, HBCU Live at the U.S. Open. Now in its third year, the annual event is slated for August 30. It is more than a tennis showcase: it celebrates heritage, tradition, and vitality. At center stage is The “HBCU Yard Experience,” a vibrant gathering space reminiscent of HBCU campuses.

The Yard Experience is just one of many initiatives the U.S. Tennis Association is proud to support in its quest to showcase and advance HBCUs.
