Who’ll Get Dame?

The Lillard Watch has ended in Portland. The 7x NBA All-Star has requested a trade and is ready to contribute to a contending team. The intriguing question is: Who’ll claim Dame?

Multiple teams have reached out to Portland on a possible Lillard deal, but only a few have a realistic shot at claiming the Larry O’Brien trophy–something that Dame seeks. Which teams have the best shot at him? Here’s what I think.

Boston Celtics. Celtics receive Damian Lillard, Matisse Thybulle, 2025 second-round pick. Blazers receive Jaylen Brown, Malcolm Brogdon, Luke Kornet, 2024 and 2025 first-round picks. The Celtics need a point guard to elevate their offense, and Dame fills the bill. With Smart already traded and Brognon with injury issues, Dame fits right in immediately. Boston can also use Thybulle as a replacement for Grant Williams.

Miami Heat. Heat receive Damian Lillard. Blazers receive Tyler Herro, 2024, 2026, and 2027 first-round picks. Miami is Dame’s preferred destination, but the negotiation about the trade is taking time. Dame will fit in immediately, and Jimmy Butler needs another star to rely on.

Milwaukee Bucks. Bucks receive Damian Lillard. Blazers receive Grayson Allen, Bobby Portis, Marjon Beauchamp, a 2027 second-round pick, and a 2028 first-round pick. Dame’s chances with the Bucks are as good as they are for the Celtics. However, the big issue is what the Blazers get in return. But much like the Bradley Beal to Phoenix deal, it is possible. Dame will fit right away in Milwaukee, just as Jrue Holiday adjusted his play as a combo guard during his time with the Pelicans. Having Dame and Giannis together…. What a duo!

Honorable Mentions: Sixers, Knicks, Jazz, and Spurs.
