The “Draft of the Quarterbacks” and the Agent Who Made History

Marvin Demoff has negotiated contracts for many athletes over the years, but none of his negotiations garnered the attention that matched what happened after the 1983 NFL Draft. It etched Demoff’s name in the annals of NFL history. Here’s why.

The 1983 NFL Draft will be forever known as “The Draft of the Quarterbacks.” Six big names were first-round picks that year–the most in NFL history–John Elway (Stanford/Broncos), Todd Blackledge (Penn State/Chiefs), Jim Kelly (Miami FL/USFL later Bills), Tony Eason (Illinois/Patriots), Ken O’Brien UC Davis/Jets), and Dan Marino (Pittsburgh/Dolphins).

Demoff represented four of the six–Marino, Elway, Kelly, and Eason.

Four of those stars played in the Super Bowl, four participated in the Pro Bowl, and three were inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Demoff grew up in California, a sports fan, and matured to become a power broker in the game he loved, football. His story is chronicled in ESPN’s  30 for 30’s “From Elway to Marino (full episode). It’s worth a watch. (promo follows)
