1986, Terrific Year for Houston Sports

, , , ,

1986 was an excellent year for two of Houston’s pro teams, the NBA’s Rockets and the MLB’s Astros. Both teams made the postseason that year.

The Houston Rockets had “The Twin Towers,” Hakeem Olajuwon and Ralph Sampson. The Rockets beat the Los Angeles Lakers in the Western Conference Finals and then faced the Boston Celtics in the NBA Championship Series. Larry Bird and the Celtics proved too much for the Rockets, winning the series 4-2.

The Astros made it to the National League Championship Series and faced the tough New York Mets for the right to go to the 1986 World Series. Houston lost in six games despite the fact that Mike Scott was named the series MVP, and it was the Mets, not the Astros, that went on to face the American League’s Boston Red Sox.

The good news for Houston fans is that two of their teams made the postseason in 1986. Memories from those seasons–nearly forty years ago–are forever lodged in Houston’s sports lore.
