What Were They Thinking?! (Vols’ Hooker Not a Heisman Finalist)

, ,

Numbers don’t lie. Hendon Hooker was snubbed. Period.

Who is voting for the Heisman? Not only have they traditionally overlooked some serious factors that have me shaking my head, but I’m also wondering if it is rigged, so a buddy’s kid is handed the trophy.

What is it based on, and for what reason? I wondered whose prodigal son was slated to be handed a trophy like it was selected two years ahead. Sometimes it is just so out of order and lopsided that I wonder what the powers that be are even looking at. So there’s no doubt the players they invited to the Heisman are good and great, too.

There is no doubt that they had great seasons, but this latest snub is beyond too much. It just has to end. You say to yourself it can’t go this way this time. The Tennessee Volunteers football team was commanded and lead by Hendon Hooker. It must have been easy to overlook his comparable numbers with the others on the list they invited. But the fact that Tennessee still had the #1 offense in all of the NCAA based on total yards should not even have a chance to go missed and unconsidered, especially when considering who’s single-season stands out as most recognizable as the best college football season.

Tennessee was third in all the NCAA in passing alone but #1 in total offense yards. That has to count for something when it comes to choosing the Heisman winner. To not even be invited is insane. He has a 69.6 completion percentage, higher than any on the list. He had a 9.5 yards average per pass, higher than anyone else on the Heisman trophy list. He averaged 4.1 yards per carry, which is higher than the others. He had a 175.5 rating.

But, combined with those numbers and stats, the simple fact is that he commanded the #1 offense of the entire NCAA season in total yards. Most of his other numbers are tops, too, so I cannot understand how that could ever go overlooked or disregarded when considering who deserves to hoist the trophy this year. As far as considerations are concerned, his entire season and the offense’s statistics under his control and guidance certainly deserve to be in contention for the trophy.

All those numbers stand out, especially when the ones chosen to be considered for the award are still statistically a step behind. Nothing could be considered more unfair. Maybe they want to hear the sound of my anger.

Check your ethics. Release the criteria for which you select the Heisman award winner. Then do the decent thing. Hooker deserves to be invited to the award ceremony. He also deserves the award.
