Brett Favre and the Southern Miss Scandal

, ,

Favre is implicated in the improper use of state funds. Funds designated for vulnerable people were used to build an athletic facility at the University of Southern Mississippi.

Brett Favre played 20 seasons in the NFL, primarily with the Green Bay Packers. He spent one year with the New York Jets and finished his last few seasons with the Minnesota Vikings. Favre had 321 consecutive starts from 1992 to 2010, including 297 regular season games. That’s the most starts in league history. He is also a Super Bowl champion quarterback.

All of that said, Favre is no stranger to controversy, including being in hot water, and that’s the storyline again. The quarterback is involved in a lawsuit filed in Mississippi.

At issue is how a new volleyball arena was paid for at his alma mater, Southern Mississippi, where his daughter played the sport. While it’s not a headline matter when a rich and famous person contributes to college athletics, in this case, it’s a matter of the money source.

The allegation is that the funds came from a public source, the State of Mississippi, and a nonprofit that supposedly serves Mississippi’s limited-resource citizens. Then-governor Phil Bryant is allegedly involved in the conspiracy. In addition, Favre reportedly received over $1 million from welfare funds to make promised promotional appearances, a commitment he may not have fulfilled.

According to the Mississippi Free Press, “(Nancy) New ran the nonprofit Mississippi Community Education Center when it directed $5 million in Temporary Assistance For Needy Families to The University of Southern Mississippi Athletic Foundation, whose board she sat on. Funds were used to fund the stadium on the Hattiesburg campus. Her nonprofit also directed $1.1 million to Favre for motivational speeches he never delivered.”

New and her son plead guilty to various charges, and further investigations are underway.

We’ll see how this matter unfolds.

WOW!That’s too bad. I really liked Brett Favre. However, if he really did these things, it needs to be dealt with legally. I think that when big names, whether it be sports, entertainment and especially political figures do illegal things…they are not above the law and should be punished. Thank you Matthew Paris for bringing the info out!
