Simone Biles to Receive Presidential Medal of Freedom

Biles, an accomplished American gymnast, is getting what a person of her stature deserves–the Presidential Medal of Honor.

Simone Biles was born on March 14, 1997, in Columbus, Ohio, the third of four siblings. She first tried gymnastics at age six during a daycare field trip. Showing off some of her talents early, Biles enrolled at Bannon’s Gymnastics and began training with coach Aimee Boorman at age eight.

Biles, as a youth

Biles began her elite career at age fourteen, with her first effort at the 2011 American Classic in Houston. She placed third all-around, first on vault and balance beam, and fourth on floor exercise.

Not long after, Biles began competing in world championships, winning gold in almost all of them. Biles then won four gold medals in a single Olympics at the 2016 Games in Rio, setting an American record for the most gold medals in gymnastics. Biles joins Mary Lou Retton (1984), Shannon Miller (1992), and Nastia Liukin (2008) in winning five women’s gymnastics medals at a single Olympiad.

Simone Biles, who lives in the north suburb of Spring, Texas, represents her country and Houston well.

Congrats, Simone Biles. You deserve it!
