Justin Verlander Just Keeps Winning

, ,

The nearly 40-year-old ace shows no signs of slowing down.

The Houston Astros took on the Seattle Mariners Friday night at Minute Maid Park. The game was all Houston as the Astros won 11-1. The Astros had their star pitcher Justin Verlander pitching, and he had a great night giving up one run and five hits. With the win, the Astros are now 12 games up in the American League West, and Verlander leads the majors in wins (14).

At 39, Verlander looks to be strong as ever in his comeback from Tommy John surgery. Not only does he lead the Major League in wins, but he also leads in ERA. In his last six starts, Verlander is 6-0 with a 0.86 ERA and 0.84 WHIP. And with Friday’s victory, Verlander picked up the 240th win of his career.

Can Verlander win his third Cy Young Award? I wouldn’t bet against it. Verlander won the award in 2011 with the Detroit Tigers and again with the Astros in 2019. He has finished second three other times.

Talk about sustaining excellence! Another way of saying that is “Justin Verlander.”

Very interesting article. I love baseball but, since I don’t follow it closely I had no idea about Justin Verlander. This is an awesome feat. I grew up an Oakland A’s fan going to a lot of the A’s games in the ’70’s. I have seen a lot of great players play in MLB. I got the luxury of seeing Nolan Ryan strike out Ricky Henderson for his 5000th strike out, in Oakland. Granted, that was against my team. But, history was being made and that was awesome! The reason I bring this up, is how far will Justin Verlander go and what records will he break? Thank you Matthew Paris for bringing this info out. Great article, sir!
