Takeaways

PRIMETIME GAMES: The Ravens are playing three prime-time games this year, two on the road, leaving room for two games to be flexed into that spot if the league decides to do that. (Note: The maximum for any team is five primetime games.)

BYE WEEK: The bye will come after nine games, roughly midway through the season, with a home game against Carolina right after that. That is basically where Baltimore’s bye has fallen in recent years.

OPEN SUNDAYS: For now, the Ravens have three open Sundays on the schedule,  October 30, November 13, and December 25. Two games have yet to be announced.

AFC NORTH GAMES: Two of the three AFC North return games (the second matchups) will be on the road like last year. In 2020, all three were on the road. The first of the two annual Baltimore-Pittsburgh games will be on December 11, the latest in Baltimore franchise history.

FLEX SCHEDULING: Flex scheduling starts in Week Five. It is done to pick a matchup with the most playoff implications. Decisions are made 12 days before kickoff except for the final week when the call is made seven days out.

INTERCONFERENCE PLACEMENT GAME: The New York Giants are on the schedule as the newly-added interconference placement game. All NFC teams get home-field advantage for it this year.

INTRACONFERENCE PLACEMENT GAMES: The road game at Jacksonville and the home game with Denver are the AFC placement games, and the Ravens will play all teams in the AFC East and NFC South.

PLAYING TEAMS COMING OFF A BYE WEEK: The Ravens will play just one team coming off a bye, which will occur when they travel to Jacksonville. One game has been cross-flexed this year–the Week Three game at New England, normally a CBS game, will be shown on Fox instead. Baltimore was 1-1 in such games last year, beating Chicago but losing to Cleveland.

GAMES VS. 2021 PLAYOFF TEAMS: Baltimore will play seven games against 2021 playoff teams, four on the road.

SCHEDULE DIFFICULTY: Based on last year’s records, the Ravens’ schedule is tied for the tenth-easiest in the league.

TRAVEL MILES: Baltimore will fly the third-fewest miles to play its schedule; only Pittsburgh and Detroit will fly fewer miles.

GAMES OUTSIDE OF THE EASTERN TIME ZONE: The Ravens have just one game (New Orleans) outside the Eastern time zone.

About Joe Platania

Veteran Ravens correspondent Joe Platania is in his 45th year in sports media (including two CFL seasons when Batlimore had a CFL team) in a career that extends across parts of six decades. Platania covers sports with insight, humor, and a highly prescient eye, and that is why he has made his mark on television, radio, print, online, and in the podcast world. He can be heard frequently on WJZ-FM’s “Vinny And Haynie” show, alongside ex-Washington general manager Vinny Cerrato and Bob Haynie. A former longtime member in good standing of the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association and the Pro Football Writers of America, Platania manned the CFL Stallions beat for The Avenue Newspaper Group of Essex (1994 and ’95) and the Ravens beat since the team’s inception — one of only three local writers to do so — for PressBox, The Avenue, and other local publications and radio stations. A sought-after contributor and host on talk radio and TV, he made numerous appearances on “Inside PressBox” (10:30 a.m. Sundays), and he was heard weekly for eight seasons on the “Purple Pride Report,” WQLL-AM (1370). He has also appeared on WMAR-TV’s “Good Morning Maryland” (2009), Comcast SportsNet’s “Washington Post Live” (2004-06), and WJZ-TV’s “Football Talk” postgame show — with legend Marty Bass (2002-04). Platania is the only sports journalist in Maryland history to have been a finalist for both the annual Sportscaster of the Year award (1998, which he won) and Sportswriter of the Year (2010). He is also a four-time Maryland-Delaware-District of Columbia Press Association award winner. Platania is a graduate of St. Joseph’s (Cockeysville), Calvert Hall College High School, and Towson University, where he earned a degree in Mass Communications. He lives in Cockeysville, MD.
