The top six picks address major team needs.

The 2022 Draft picks are over, and the Houston Texans had the $3 overall pick. The team selected Derek Stingley Jr. The Texans need help in the secondary, and  Stingley. Jr. dominated there during his time at LSU.

With the second pick in Round 1 (#15 overall), the Texans selected OG Kenyon Green from Texas A&M. Green should be a solid pass-protector, having earned All-America status the past two seasons.

At the #37 overall pick in Round 2, the Texans selected Jalen Pitre, a safety from Baylor. Pitre played 657 snaps in college at slot cornerback, and he is quick to the ball.

At #44, the Texans selected John Metchie III, a wide receiver from Alabama. Metchie III tore his ACL in the SEC Championship Game, but he should be ready to go by the time he gets to Houston.

In Round 3 and at #75, the Texans chose Christian Harris, a linebacker who (like Metchie III) played for Nick Saban at ‘Bama. Harris had 80 tackles last season and 5.5 sacks. His explosiveness and good hands will be an asset in Texas.

In Round 4 and at $107, the Texans selected Dameon Pierce, a running back out of Florida. The Texans averaged a league-worst 3.4 yards per rush and finished with only eight rushing touchdowns on the season, and Pierce should improve those numbers.

The Texans then finished off the draft by adding depth to both the offensive and defensive lines.

I think the front office and Head Coach Lovie Smith had a good draft. The goal is improving, and I think the Texans will do just that. I don’t think Houston is yet a playoff-caliber team, but I think they are on the right track.
