Brown made headlines after hanging up his football cleats.

Reggie Brown played high school football in Miami, enrolled at Alabama State, and eventually made it to the NFL at a wideout, playing for the Houston Oilers in 1993 and 1994.

Not a great player (he amassed only 64 total yards in two years of pro play), Brown was known as a hard worker with a lot of heart–attributes that served him well in what he’d do next.

While Brown didn’t make a name for himself in pro ball, he did just that after his football days were over. Brown began by earning his master’s and doctoral degrees. Then he went into teaching and school administration.

Today, he is the first African American to serve as principal of Dulles Middle School in Sugarland, Texas, a Houston suburb.

In a recent interview, Brown said: “If you work hard, there are no barriers, there are no limits to what you can achieve or what you can accomplish. So for me, it’s all about the work and support of these kids.”

About Matthew Paris

I grew up an avid Houston sports fan. After graduating from Texas Tech University in Theater and English Literature I worked as a marketing rep and coach for I9 Sports, coaching baseball, flag football, soccer, and basketball. I’m currently with Austin Sports Academy as a marketing coordinator, baseball and football coach, and coordinator of middle school and high school open play nights. I’ve written three short films for Looknow Productions and have also written articles on film marketing, producing, and directing. I really enjoy writing about sports and being an active contributor to The Sports Column.
