Tate Myre’s Heroic Act

, ,

Tate Myre was an honor student, high school football player, and, on November 30th, a hero. Eyewitnesses said Myre rushed a high school shooter in an attempt to disarm him. Myre was shot. He died in a police squad car in transit to the hospital.

Tate Myre played football at Oxford High in Michigan. He was a good player, too, winning honors as a linebacker and tight end, cited recently by the Michigan High School Football Coaches Association, Division 1. Those who knew Myre said he was hard-working and respectful.

Myre had collegiate aspirations, possibly continuing his gridiron career, too. In-state and out-of-state schools were high on his list, including Grand Valley, Michigan State, Toledo, and Notre Dame.

The Michigan Wolverines will honor Tate Myre today when they take the field against Iowa in the Big 10 Championship game, “TM 42.” There’s also a move to rename the Oxford High football stadium in his name.

Tate Myre is an American hero. How he died is an American tragedy.
