Meet Dangerous Damarion Ingram, Teenage Boxing Sensation

, ,

At only 13 years old and boxing since he was a five-year-old, Ingram is already an accomplished boxer. I sat down with him recently to discuss his career, long-term goals, and what he thinks about today’s boxers.

McElwain: Tell me a bit more about your background.

Ingram: My stepdad has been boxing since 1996, and he has been a coach for 15 years.

McElwain: Who are your boxing influences and why?

Ingram: Kevin Evans. When I was younger, I always tried to fight like my teammate, and I’d also add Roy Jones and Mike Tyson to that list. I try to take Roy’s elusive universal fighting style and then mix it with peekaboo here and there while I’m being aggressive.

McElwain: Who was your favorite opponent, and why?

Ingram: His name is Jose Mora. He was bigger and older. I was losing the fight through the 3rd round. Then I landed a huge overhand left followed by a straight left, and he went down. It was my very first knockout!

“Dangerous” in action

McElwain: As a teen making a name for yourself in boxing, have you let fame get to your head?

Ingram: I don’t have fame yet. So I haven’t had to deal with it. But generally, I’m a humble guy.

McElwain: What goals do you have for your career?

Ingram: To win a National Championship and a Golden Gloves championship, to compete in The Olympics, and to fight in Madison Square Garden. My dream is to fight in MSG.

McElwain: Jake Paul has been making a name for himself in the world of boxing. Do you view him as a real fighter?

Ingram: When I hear Jake Paul, I don’t think, “Oh, the boxer.” I think, “He’s the guy who made vines and YouTube vlogs.” I don’t see him as a real fighter because he hasn’t fought a REAL boxer yet–only retired MMA fighters and another YouTuber.

McElwain: Describe boxing in one word.

Ingram: It’s a “lifestyle.”

McElwain: What advice have you gotten from your parents to help you be awesome in your sport?

Ingram: My mom always tells me, ‘Go get it!” Those words push me to do better every day.

McElwain: If boxing doesn’t work out, what is your backup plan?

Ingram: It’s not a backup plan. I want to be a pro boxer and a carpenter.
