People who know me know that I grew up in a sports family. And baseball is the #1 sport in my family. That said, I was the one who broke the mold and played football, and I also ran track.

My older brother, David, played baseball for the University of Texas under Coach Cliff Gustafson. I loved going to Austin to see him play at Dish-Falk Field. Later, David played minor league baseball for the Rio Grande Valley White Wings. He was a coach there, too. Before David’s time, my grandfather played baseball for the University of Houston. Later, he was drafted by MLB as a pitcher.

We’ve had two generations of high school pitchers. And, now, I’m pleased to say the number is three in the person of my nephew Jack Paris. I’m pleased to say that Jack will take his skills to the collegiate level at Texas A&M. Jack, at 6’3 and growing, can throw his fastball up to 86 mph.

I’m very proud of Jack. I’ve watched him grow into an outstanding young athlete, and he is also a person of character.

Congrats to Jack Paris! The family looks forward to him doing great things in College Station.

About Matthew Paris

I grew up an avid Houston sports fan. After graduating from Texas Tech University in Theater and English Literature I worked as a marketing rep and coach for I9 Sports, coaching baseball, flag football, soccer, and basketball. I’m currently with Austin Sports Academy as a marketing coordinator, baseball and football coach, and coordinator of middle school and high school open play nights. I’ve written three short films for Looknow Productions and have also written articles on film marketing, producing, and directing. I really enjoy writing about sports and being an active contributor to The Sports Column.
