“Everyday Hero” Was Christopher Reeve’s Sports Hoorah

Reeve directed a film with an enduring message.

The sports world has had a major impact on the cinema industry over the years with films inspired by the sports we all know and love. Those films include Boogie, Southpaw, Luca, Concussion, Space Jam, and Underdogs, movies that I have previously written about on these pages.

Another film that stands out is the 2006 animated baseball film, Everyone’s Hero. It was directed by the late Christopher Reeve, who passed away in 2004, and starred Jake T. Austin, Rob Reiner, William H. Macy, Whoopi Goldberg, and two stars that have also since left us, Dana Reeve and Robin Williams.

The film centers around a young baseball player named Yankee (played by Austin), who is having trouble on his baseball team and is ready to quit. But when Babe Ruth’s prized baseball bat (played by Goldberg) is stolen and his dad loses his job as a janitor for the New York Yankees, Yankee, and a talking baseball, Screwie (played by Reiner), go on a journey to get it back from Lefty (played by Macy) and Napoleon (played by Williams). They do it before the 1932 World Series played between the Yankees and the Chicago Cubs. Napoleon, the GM, sends Lefty, the pitcher, to steal the bat.

Eventually, both villains get their just reward by doing community service during the Yankees’ victory parade.

What stands out for me about this film is the message: Don’t give up on your dreams just because people say you can’t do it. It’s an enduring message, indeed.
