New ‘Space Jam’ Film Hits Theaters July 16

,

I can’t wait to see it!

Space Jam: A New Legacy comes to theatres next week. LeBron James, Damian Lillard, Chris Paul, Kyle Irving, Don Cheadle, and others will appear in the sequel to the 1999 original, which starred Michael Jordan.

I’ve written about the film previously, but the purpose this time is to explore two questions before the films’ release.

Michael Jordan’s cameo: What will Jordan do in the film? TSC’s Jason Feirman had this prediction (on Twitter): “I think in the new Space Jam movie Michael Jordan will make a cameo as the coach or a quick play off the bench like Bill Murray in the original. Something!”

Soundtrack: The 1999 soundtrack included Seal, D’Angelo, Salt-N-Pepa, Coolio, Busta Rhymes, and Bugs Bunny rapping Jay-Z’s lyrics. In 2021, we’ll have Lil Baby, Kirk Franklin, 24kGoldn, Lil Wayne, Jonas Brothers, Saweetie, Lil Tecca, John Legend, and Salt-N-Pepa. And while I’m glad that R. Kelly is gone from the track this time, Lil Uzi Vert’s (Pump Up the Jam) is. I know people are innocent until proven guilty, but I wonder why the producers would gamble by including Uzi (abuse allegations) in a movie targeted for kids.

Space Jam: A New Legacy comes out on July 16 in theaters and on HBO Max. Will it be as epic as the 1999 version? We’ll see!
