Rising Canadian star makes it all the way to the Wimbledon semi-final.

Canadian tennis star Denis Shapovalov earned a berth in his first Grand Slam semifinal at Wimbledon, competing against the world’s #1 ranked player Novak Djokovic. While the 22-year-old Shapovalov looked to become the first Canadian to win a men’s Grand Slam singles title, Djokovic had already won two majors this year–The French Open and the Australian Open.

As the match progressed, there were times when Shapovalov appeared to get the better of Djokovic, but he couldn’t close out sets against the world’s best player.

Djokovic, 34, ultimately defeated Shapovalov in the semi, and then went on to beat Matteo Berrettini 6-7 (4), 6-4, 6-4, 6-3 in the Wimbledon final, capturing his 20th major title and 6th Wimbledon title. And with the win, Djokovic joins tennis legends Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal as joint record holders for the most major titles all-time.

Djokovic knows talent when he plays against it, and he had high praise for Shapovalov. “He is an exciting player and we are sure to see a lot more of him in coming years,” said Djokovic.

With the rise of Denis Shapovalov, along with Bianca Andreescu (the 4th ranked woman in the world, the highest-ever Canadian), Canada is back on the tennis map. And how wonderful that is!

About Christian Mota-Pyette

Sports were an everyday part of my life while growing up in Ontario, Canada, While I was never the most gifted athlete, my passion and love for sports never faded. As I grew older, my interests shifted from competing in sports to talking about sports, and I extended that interest to majoring in sports management in college. Writing about sports is also part of my plan. It’s a platform to share my love of sports with others worldwide.
