In Africa, Ministerial Webinar Focuses on Safeguarding and Promoting Traditional Sports and Games (TSG)

The webinar was organized by the African TSG Confederation in collaboration with UNESCO and the International Council of TSG.


Held virtually in mid-June, the webinar examined the potentials of TSG in promoting respect for difference, inclusion, intercultural dialogue reconciliation, and peaceful coexistence. Quality physical education, in particular, is a priority for the African region.

The webinar focused on TSG in Africa

The webinar opened with a speech given by Mrs. Gabriela Ramos, Assistant Director-General, Social and Human Sciences of UNESCO, who highlighted UNESCO’s work in Africa and accentuated the importance of TSG work there.

Mr. Khalil Ahmed Khan, President of the International Council of Traditional Sports and Games, congratulated the organizers for holding the webinar, and he applauded Mr. Shammi Rana, Secretary-General of the International Council of Traditional Sports and Games, for having a fruitful visit that led to creating an ATSGC Secretariat in Sierra Leone.

Mr. Khan also expressed appreciation to Mr. Yahya Al Matarr Jobe, President, and Mr. Michael Shamsu Mustapha, Secretary of the ATSGC, for their work in enriching Africa’s cultures. Mr. Khan then thanked Mrs. Gabriela Ramos, ADG SHS UNESCO, for her supporting, safeguarding, and promoting TSG. He also acknowledged Mrs. Angela Melo, Director, Mr. Marcellin Dally, Secretary Antidoping Convention, and Mr. Jonathan Lorcher-beaudran at the UNESCO Secretariat for their devotion to TSG.

Mr. Khan declared that the future belongs to Traditional Sports and Games. Soon, he continued, the world will harvest the fruit of work to promote TSG.

The webinar was attended by many dignitaries and noteworthy TSG figures, including Aman Kumar Sharma, ex-member Adhoc Advisory Committee Traditional Sports and Games(UNESCO), Mr. Raj Rathore Chairman Bukido, World Federation, and Sartaj Singh Sekhon, Joint Secretary International Taegyukyusul Federation.

The webinar ended with the thanks note by Michael Mustafa Shamsu, Secretary-General of the African Traditional Sports and Games Confederation (ATSGC).
