Sweden Frustrates Spain in Euro 2021, Today’s Hungary v. Portugal Elicits Memories

Spaniards have to regroup as Hungary wonders if it can redo what it pulled off five years ago.

Spain was baffled by Sweden at the European Championship on Monday, with Juventus striker Alvaro Morata rejecting two fine possibilities as the team created more multiple chances for the forward. Morata, 28, had great freedom to break the halt. But Sweden nearly grabbed a far-fetched win as Marcus Berg discharged a shot over the crossbar.

In his post-match remarks, Spain’s Luis Enrique avoided queries regarding Morata, who botched two great opportunities. “The surface didn’t help,” he said. “The players whined about it, and you could see their issues in controlling the ball and focusing on the match.”

Swedish head coach Andersson offered a reasoned response: “In the event that you come here and play Spain in 32-degree warmth and believe you will outflank them, you’re absolutely credulous. I’m not under any condition embarrassed about this point. We need to secure more points in the next match.”

The Swedes play next on Friday v. Slovakia, while Spain will take on Poland the following day.

Today, Hungary goes up against a Portuguese squad it has never beaten in 13 endeavors (D4, L9). In fact, in head-to-head play, the Hungarians have not scored in five of the last six outings, and rising to the occasion today will be a tall order against the defending champions–a team that has advanced into the knockout stage in every one of its last seven Euro appearances. Since November 2019, only one group has figured out how to stop Fernando Santos’ side.

Players to watch today include defender Willi Orbán, Hungary’s top scorer in qualifying, and Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo, who has scored four objectives and conveyed two aids in his last three matches v. Hungary, which includes an exciting 3-3 draw at Euro 2016 when the Hungarians proceeded to the knockout stage.
