Nashville’s ‘Music City Blitz’ Triumphs for Special Olympics Tennessee

Win-win philosophy prevailed last weekend in Nashville.

Everyone loves a winner in the competitive world of sports. But there’s something else that people need to keep in mind. It’s the concept of “win-win.” And that’s exactly what unfolded during last Sunday’s adult flag football tournament, The Music City Blitz, held at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tennessee.

A lot of athleticism on display at Nissan Stadium.

The tournament featured teams from Nashville and the surrounding region playing on the same field where the NFL’s Tennessee Titans play. And there were more winners than those who participated in Sunday’s games. The 4th annual event benefitted The Special Olympics Tennessee.

‘Excitement’ was the word of the day. For starters, the opening ceremony featured teams and players being introduced via the stadium PA system and Jumbotron as they ran through the Titans’ tunnel amid smoke and fire.

Then it was time to get down to business. The gridiron was divided into four 30 x 70-yard fields with simultaneous gameplay throughout the afternoon.

Special Olympians played the first game of the day. After that, adult athletes competed in divisions created just for them. Top Gun included players/teams that compete regularly. Recreational was designed for those who play on a semi-regular basis or have limited organized football experience. Finally, the Battle of the Badges featured those responsible for public safety, including active/retired law enforcement, firefighters, EMS professionals, and other first responders.

Simply Amazing won the Top Gun division, while Murfreesboro PD Donuts took the hard-fought Battle of the Badges crown. Turf Kingz was the last team standing in the competitive Recreational division.

But the big winner–$40,000 worth raised on the day–was the Special Olympics Tennessee, an organization that serves/supports athletes by providing year-round sports training and athletic competitions in various Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. That work provides continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness as all involved experience joy and friendship with athletes, their families, and the broader Nashville community.

It’s a WIN-WIN for sure!
