Kazuya is the Newest MMA Game Rep in Smash

Sometimes dreams do come true!

On Sunday, I made a list of six sports video game characters that I wanted to see join the Super Smash Bros. battle roster. The main thing that I wanted was a representative of another mixed martial arts game, like Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, or Mike Tyson’s Knockout.

Well, during Tuesday’s Nintendo Direct live stream, my calls were answered–at least in a sense.

The trailer for the Smash opened with Ganondorf from Legend of Zelda being thrown into a volcano by a mysterious figure. That figure is the newest Smash fighter, Kazuya Mishima, from the Tekken game franchise. Tekken, which began in 1994, centers around the events of the King of The Fist fighting tournament. To date, the franchise has eight games.

This reveal comes with perfect timing. In May of this year, competitive Tekken Esports announced that the tournaments and regional tours would be back in business after a year’s delay. It’s a win-win for Tekken fans!

Thank you, Nintendo, for answering my call for another MMA video game representative for Smash! More details will be revealed on June 28th. Stay tuned!
