In WNBA Action, Dream Win, Sun Blaze Way to Top, and Conference Leaders Face Off Tonight

The WNBA is off to a roaring start.

After an 0-2 start, the Atlanta Dream cracked the win column last Friday with an 83-79 road win against the 1-4 Indiana Fever. Dream guard Chennedy Carter led the way with 23 points on 9 of 17 shooting and 4 assists.

Atlanta shooting guard Courtney Williams, who helped lead the Connecticut Sun to the WNBA Finals in 2019, is proving why her acquisition is paying off. Against the Fever, she went 4 of 7 from distance and added five rebounds and four assists. Veteran forward Tiffany Hayes added 14 points, aided by going 7-8 from the charity stripe.

Speaking of Connecticut, the Sun is the league’s only undefeated team (5-0 as of May 24). Five players⎯DeWanna Bonner, Jonquel Jones, Hiedeman, B. Jones, and J. Thomas–average double-digit scoring.

Bonner, who was traded to the Sun in 2020 for three first-round picks, has proven to be an excellent acquisition. With two WNBA championship rings on her hands, Bonner wants more, and it looks like the Sun might raise its first championship trophy.

But don’t count out defending champion Seattle Storm. And that’s why tonight’s game (May 25, 10p, Eastern time) could go a long way toward telling us how the season might turn out. The contest will match the visiting Eastern Conference-leading Sun versus the Western Conference-leading Storm. Keep an eye on the Storm’s Breanna Stewart, who leads the league in scoring with 25.8 points per game. Steward, who’s also an excellent defender, will no doubt draw Bonner on defense.

Exciting basketball it is. It’s WNBA 2021!
