Sports World Responds to the Derek Chauvin Verdict

, ,

We still have a lot of work to do, but Tuesday’s verdict is a step in the right direction.

On Tuesday, a jury convicted former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin on all three counts in connection with his role in the death of George Floyd, an unarmed Black man, who died on Memorial Day 2020.

The verdict was witnessed live by millions of Americans and by people across the globe. Reactions followed, including those in the sports world. Here’s a sampling:

WNBPA: “Yes, Gianna Floyd. Your Dad has changed the world.”
Basketball great LeBron James: “Accountability.”
Basketball legend Magic Johnson: “Thank God……. Guilty!!! Justice has been served!”
Racer Bubba Wallace: “Justice served on all counts. Good. Still a ton of work to do.”
Basketball star Karl-Anthony Towns: “Justice and accountability. Things I never thought I would see.”
Basketball legend Reggie Miller: “Thank you, jury!!! ACCOUNTABILITY!”

Personally, I’m pleased, tool. When I first wrote about Floyd Mayweather making a college fund for his daughter, there was negative energy in the world. Now, following the verdict, there’s hope. I want my four siblings to grow up in a world where we don’t judge people based on the color of their skin but (instead) on their character.

We still have a lot of work to do, but Tuesday’s verdict is a step in the right direction.
