MLB’s Rush to Fill the Stands: It’s the Wrong Thing to Do

When it comes to MLB, the prudent choice is to stay home and watch games on your favorite electronic device.

It’s easy to understand why fans are pumped up to see baseball again and to attend games in person. But the numbers tell us that the COVID-19 pandemic is far from over.

That’s why Major League Baseball needs to pay heed. The Texas Rangers filled the stadium for their home opener against the Toronto Blue Jays. Team management said it was a one-time deal, and mask rules were enforced. But based on pictures I’ve seen, not many people were wearing masks and social distancing was impossible in the packed house.

This isn’t about sports. It’s about life. I’ve been careful, and just got my first dose of the vaccine so that I can visit my mother this summer. But responsible behavior can get canceled by self-serving behavior, and that isn’t right. While people like to say that we’re in this together, ‘we’ begins with you and me.

So when it comes to MLB, the prudent choice is to stay home and watch games on your favorite electronic device.
