Tom Brady, Me, and Our Sixth Grade Encounter

,

Here is a story about Tom Brady and me that I attest is true.

In sixth grade, I had a class assignment to write a letter to a student in another school, and the student I got was Tom Brady of Long Beach, CA. When I wrote my letter to Tom, I told him that the Patriots were my favorite team and the Red Sox, too. I also told him football was my favorite sport and that I wanted to play professionally.

I think I told him that my mother didn’t want me to play because I could get hurt.

Later on, in high school, I met up with Tom Brady. He was visiting from California and we talked. He said he was going to play for the Patriots. I told him I wasn’t sure if I would get to play. He said he knew it was my dream to play for them. He told me he was going to play in college for the Michigan Wolverines.

I, on the other hand, started school at the University of Tennessee and ended up at UMass Amherst.

I was home from school one day when the Michigan game was on, and the camera focused on Tom Brady, who was sitting on the bench. The announcer was going through some facts, including saying that it was Brady’s senior year. He had lost his starting spot to Drew Henson.

I saw that the Wolverines were losing the game, and I said to the TV, “You should get out there, Tom! They are going to lose the ballgame. Drew’s not getting it done. It’s your senior year. They are going to lose without you, and you are just sitting on the bench! The coach should put you in. You know what? I’m the coach that’s putting you in. Get out there and win for your team. Lead them to victory!”

I watched him look around and then get up, put his helmet on, and jog out there. I said, “Now, just march them down the field and get a touchdown!” Sure enough, he did. Then I said, “There you go!”

Later on, my brother asked me who the Patriots should pick with the 199th Draft pick. I said, “Tom Brady, if he’s even available then. He’ll be great.” Then, on Draft day, that’s exactly what happened.

Later, I went to the stadium for a preseason game. I shared my story with everyone around me, and I even told them that Brady could win as many as ten Super Bowls. They thought I was crazy, but I kept explaining why.

I described all of this to my cousin and his fiancee. She said: “You are not God!” I said, “Ok, would this prove it to you?” I then described how the next few years in football would go. And then I watched it all happen. (I don’t know if they noted it down.)

I said, “Now, Brady will end up with the Buccaneers. They will pay him and he’ll be reunited with Rob Gronkowski.” My cousin said, “Are you serious? Then, I am going to hate him!” I said, “Why? Don’t hate him. He is going to Tampa Bay to play on the NFC side because he has been beating up on AFC quarterbacks for twenty years.

That’s two decades. Now he’ll play from the NFC side to prove it wasn’t a lesser conference and that he can make it on the NFC side, too.”

It happened exactly as I said: Brady dominated from the NFC side. That will make him the G.O.A.T., The Greatest of All Time.

Congratulations, Mr. Brady, on your seventh Super Bowl title.
