Jonas Neubauer, World’s Greatest Tetris Player, Dies Unexpectedly

, ,

On January 5th, Esports’ world said goodbye to Jonas Neubauer, who died at 39 after suffering a medical emergency.

Jonas Neubauer was the greatest Tetris player of all time, winning seven world championships.

Using his uncle’s computer, Neubauer started playing at the age of six and, by nine, he was playing the NES version of the game. In 2006, Neubauer achieved the first recorded max-out (i.e., he scored 999,999 points in a game). Two years later, he achieved another max-out on Level 19 of the game.

In 2010, Neubauer defeated Harry Hong in the Classic Tetris World Championship, and he went on to win the next three championships. After losing to Hong in 2014, Neubauer won three more championships (2015-2017) before losing in 2018 to 16-year-old Joseph Salee.

In January 2018, Neubauer set a world speed record for reaching 30,000 points, doing so in 1 minute, 57 seconds. Five months later, he set a point record by totaling 1,245,200 points.

Neubauer’s legacy is secure in Esports. RIP, Tetris legend.
