The Late Bill Withers Pranked the USC Football Team

Music’s Hall of Famer, Bill Withers, passed away last Monday at the age of 81.

Known for the iconic Lean On Me, Withers paved the way for many RnB singers who followed him. But what his fans may not realize is that Withers loved sports and also was a jokester. In 2009, he put the two together while being asked to speak to a college football team.

The USC Trojans invited Withers to speak before a game. During his pre-game talk, Withers told the team that a fungus was spreading in the locker room. After a pause, Withers told the shocked players that he had just “punked them, big time.” Returning to the proper theme of the day, Withers led the Trojans in a rendition of his famous, Lean On Me.

I bring that up because that song was one of my family’s favorites. I’ll respect Bill Withers forever. RIP.
