Adjusting to Life Without Sports and Sporting Events

, , , ,

Explore alternatives to live sports! Here are some suggestions.

Sports fans are facing reality: with Coronavirus pandemic worries, live events have been put on hold. Casualties abound. Wimbledon has been canceled, the MLB season delayed, the Tokyo Summer Olympics and the Master’s golf tournament have been postponed, the NBA season suspended, and the Kentucky Derby and Indianapolis 500 rescheduled. The NFL draft is still on for next week, but transactions will be done electronically and without spectators.

Without live events, fans need to find ways to enjoy sports passively. With some out-of-the-box thinking and planning, there’s still plenty of enjoyment to be had. How so? Here are some options.

First, there’s a vast list of sports-related films to watch on streaming services or by renting/purchasing DVDs. Engaging like this will also help the economy! The list cuts across sports. There’s a caveat, though. If you decide to watch as a family/household with children, do a little research to make sure that the content is appropriate for children and/or teens.

Baseball –     Field of Dreams, The Natural, A League of Their Own, The Bad News Bears, The Sandlot, Bull Durham

Football –      The Longest Yard, The Blind Side, Little Giants, North Dallas Forty, Brian’s Song, Any Given Sunday, Remember the Titans

Hockey  –       Slapshot, Miracle, Youngblood, The Mighty Ducks

Tennis   –       Battle of the Sexes, Match Point, Players, BreakPoint, Wimbledon

Basketball –  Hoosiers, Like Mike, Fast Break, Above the Rim, Finding Forrester, Semi-Pro

Golf            –  Tin Cup,  Caddyshack, The Founders, Happy Gilmore, The Back Nine, The Caddy, Babe (Didrickson-Zaharias)

Swimming –  Against the Current, On A Clear Day, Swimming Upstream, Dangerous When Wet, Breaking the Surface: The Greg Louganis Story

Soccer     –     She’s the Man, Kicking and Screaming, Her Best Move, Let the Girls Play, Ladybugs

If films aren’t your cup of tea, another option is board/card games. To get you thinking ….

Board Games: Monopoly Junior –monopoly game, Superslam Electronic Basketball tabletop game, Sharper Image Perfect Pitch tabletop Baseball, Magnetic Baseball Dart game, Football Trivia game

Card Games: Play Nine Golf game, Sports Trivia Challenge, Double Dribble Basketball game, MLB Spot-It Matching game.

What’s it all mean? Even though live sports are currently on an extended break, fans can still experience fun, competition, and atmosphere–albeit in different ways. So why not check out some sports movies or games? They just might be an excellent “ticket” to enjoyment!
