How ‘1738’ Crept Into Baseball Interviews

Love of Fetty Wap’s rap lyrics became a staple as the KC Royals chased a pennant.

Rapper and singer Fetty Wap is well known for hits like Trap Queen, Keke, and Promise. But his influence goes beyond the world of rap music.

Wap has a reputation in the world of baseball, too. To be more specific, Wap was popular among the Kansas City Royals when that team was making a run at the World Series.

In 2015, Royals’ players would fine each when a player didn’t include lyrics from Wap’s, Trap Queen, in interviews. More specifically, it’s about the ‘1738’ line in the song. Examples (from ESPN) include:

Mike Moustakas on a slick defensive play by Eric Hosmer: “Hoz picks that thing 17 out of 38 times.”

Cain on Trevor Bauer of the Indians: “He was like a 17-38 to the plate.”

Wap has made it big in rap and baseball.
