Astros Sign-Stealing Scandal: For This Houston Fan, Disheartening is an Understatement

, , ,

I know I don’t speak for all Astros fans, but I’d like to say ‘sorry’ to the baseball world.

Enough is enough. As a writer and diehard Astros fan, I am left speechless over the latest turn of events surrounding this beloved club. I tend to agree with most of the stone-throwing towards the team, regardless of how much I love Houston baseball.

In all honesty (something many Astros players seem to know nothing about), if the news about the cheating is true, then I believe a majority of the players on the team SHOULD be banned from baseball for life.

The 1919 Black Sox incident has been brought up by many sportswriters–and rightfully so. It makes me sick, but Houston’s baseball team is now forever tainted. Forget the 2017 World Series. In my eyes, the Astros never won a world championship. The closest they came was back in 2005.

Speaking of that ‘17 title, though, I’d like to retract the TSC column I wrote after the Astros ‘won’ the championship.

Remember when the Astros used to be untainted? That was back when we had players who played the game the right way? Those days are long gone, and it’s going to take a long time to recover from the onslaught of accusations, many of which have turned out to be true.

It’s beyond disheartening.

I’d rather have Houston be back at the bottom of the National League. Remember the days when Houston was battling in the NL Central?

I know I don’t speak for all Astros fans, but I’d like to say ‘sorry’ to the baseball world.

Yes, the fans were kept in the dark about the team’s cheating ways. But, still, Houston has hurt the integrity of Major League Baseball. There’s no denying that.

I love baseball and always have. I remember how much PEDs hurt the game. But this one stings a little more because my beloved Houston Astros are at the center of the latest MLB controversy. It’s going to be hard for me to cheer for this team.

Should the Astros be stripped of the 2017 title? Yes. Will it happen? Most likely not. Should a majority of the players from the 2017-2019 team be banned from baseball? Yes, if they were complicit. But will any players be punished by the commissioner? I highly doubt it.

With Spring Training right around the corner–and Houston still without a skipper–who knows what the future holds for the ‘Stros? One thing is certain: the Astros are a disgrace to the City of Houston and America’s Pastime.

You can’t cheat and get away with it! Enough is enough.
