Rap and Sports, The Top Five Connections

, , , , , ,

Whether we recognize it or not, rap and sports are connected.

Some rappers have played. Others dabble. A few even own sports teams. But many reference sports in their music.

Here are my picks for the best rap-sports connections.

5. Meek Mill, 24/7. This song by Meek and Ella Mai talks about commitment in a relationship. But there’s a football reference, too. “When you see me kneel like Kaepernick, call a reverend,” raps Meek. The reference is to Colin Kaepernick, who knelt during the National Anthem at NFL games.

4. Nicki Minaj, Finale. This song helped Nicki become the pioneer of female rappers, paving the way for the likes of Lizzo, Cardi B, and Cupcake. This song includes a reference to basketball star Lamar Odom. “Like Lamar Odom, I ball, scrotum,” raps Nicki. Even though the line is inappropriate, it is what it is.

3. French Montana, Gifted. This song is a self-motivational piece that helped Montana elevate his rap to international fame. The song refers to Derek Jeter: “This that Derek Jeter on his last catch,” raps Montana.

2. Travis Scott, Stargazing. Travis and this song helped Astroworld get nominated for three Grammy Awards. This song includes a reference to Kobe Bryant. “I’m way too gold for this beef, feel like I’m Kobe, yeah,” raps Travis.

1. G-Eazy, Purple Brick Road. Eazy and this song is an example of why White rappers are often as successful as their Black counterparts. Like Meek, Eazy refers to Colin Kaepernick. “Believe in something. Stand for it. Take a knee and stand, like Lewiston,” raps Eazy. This line is a call to action, and that’s why I rank it as #1.

Honorable mentions:

Rick Ross, Numb
Ace Hood, Future
Childish Gambino, My Shine
The Game, Pest Control
