Kurt Cobain Was a Youth Athlete

Cobain’s attitude affected how he approached sports.

Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain was well known for penning hits such as Smells Like Teen Spirit, In Bloom, Polly, Lithium, and Rape Me. He was also a pioneer of a new genre of music that put artists like Stone Temple Pilots and Soundgarden on the map.

But he’s often remembered for injecting a large amount of heroin and morphine before committing suicide in his Seattle home in 1994.

Heroin addiction plagued Kurt and tarnished his athletic past. He was a wrestler and ran track at school. But he wasn’t always a ‘team player.’ He purposely let himself get pinned during a wrestling match or ran slowly during a track meet. Before that, he struck out intentionally during Pee Wee ball. Why? He wanted to upset his father.

Kurt went on to be a breakthrough artist, but personal issues led to his demise. If you or someone you know is contemplating suicide, call the National Suicide Hotline at 800 273 8255.

While Kurt and Nirvana played alternative music, suicide should never be an alternative.
