For Trail Blazers, It Was Close But No Cigar. Do Major Changes Loom?

Now that applause has died down, Portland needs to get serious about taking those next, big steps.

The Blazers surprised us (except for this analyst), entertained us, and put together an exciting, accomplished season. But….

I will continue saying what I’ve been saying for some time: the Blazers need steady and robust scoring, rebounding, and defensively competent forwards (both small and power).

This team, which hasn’t had a steady small forward presence since Cliff Robinson played, would improve dramatically with someone who could go head-to-head with the likes of LeBron James, Kevin Durant, and Paul George.

Imagine the outcome of the 2019 playoffs if this team had LaMarcus Aldridge at power forward rather than Al-Farouq Aminu!

I hope that Portland will be able to parlay a strong playoff run into free agent success. Also, this team has a bevy of players–the likes of Curry, Turner, Hood, Layman, Harkless, Aminu, Leonard and, possibly, Collins–to attract substantial draft choices.

That said, I continue to think that the jury is still out when it comes to Terry Stotts. Yes, he’s liked by his players, and he has proven to be a good coach, but I’m not sure he will ever become a great coach.

One has to wonder what would have happened this year had either Popovich or Kerr been at the Blazers’ helm.

My analysis of the numbers suggests the year ahead will bring housecleaning. Will Neil Olshey go to Los Angeles? Will Terry Stotts still be here? Will we have a clue as to who might become the next owner?

Stay tuned!
