Sports and Scandals Go Together

Over the years there have been lots and lots of scandals in sports.


The sports industry has had scandals with athletes and teams. Some of those scandals were associated with athletes’ drug use. Other athletes and teams broke the law.

Here’s a starter list of scandals in the sports world.

1919–The Black Sox Scandal is committed.

1988–Ben Johnson tested positive for steroids after winning the Olympic 100 Meter Dash.

1989–Pete Rose gambled on baseball.

1993–Valenciennes football players are bribed by the players of Olympique de Marseille president Bernard Tapie to let them win.

1998–The Festina cycling team is alleged to have taken performance-enhancing drugs in the Tour de’ France.

2003–A Little League is revealed to be three years older then he reported–deception to join a team.

2005–There is a match in Germany with disgraced referee Robert Hoyzer. There is a similar incident in Brazil.

2006–The Calciopoli match-fixing scandal in Italian football involves 3/4ths of the country’s qualifiers in the 2006-07 UEFA Champions League.

2007–Micheal Vick plead guilty to his involvement in illegal dog fighting and spends 21 months in Federal jail. Around this same time, Minnesota Vikings players allegedly commit sexual harassment on a cruise.

2010-Alex “A-Rod” Rodriguez admits to taking steroids.

2011–Lance Armstrong admits to taking steroids to win many Tour de France titles and a bronze medal in the Olympics.

2015–The New England Patriots deflate footballs to win the 2015 Super Bowl. Tom Brady was suspended for the first three games of 2016.

As you can tell, there has been a lot of controversy in the world of sports. There is much more, too. Those will be saved for a later date.
