Will Urban Meyer Coach Again?

, ,

My money is on ‘yes.’ And I think it will be in the NFL. There won’t be a shortage of jobs available, either.

Urban Meyer announced that he will be retiring from coaching following the Rose Bowl game between his Ohio State Buckeyes and the Washington Huskies on New Year’s Day. Meyer stated health issues as the main reason for retirement and honestly who can blame him!

‘Coach; had surgery in 2014 because of a cyst on his brain that was causing him problems, mostly severe headaches. That was evident again this season and admittedly so by Meyer who said he was suffering at times on the sideline fighting the pain. Coaching a football game is tough enough without internal pain.

I’ll tell you this: if Urban Meyer is physically able to coach, you can bet every penny you have in the bank that he will. This man lives and breathes football as most coaches do.

Meyer has retired before–twice from the University of Florida where he won two National Championships with the Gators.

OSU’s football program now lies in the hands of former offensive coordinator Ryan Day. Day is no stranger to coaching. He was the man who stepped in for Meyer due to the Zach Smith investigation. In my opinion, that’s when coach Meyer decided this would be his last year as the Buckeyes’ head man.

It’s my belief, and in circles more in the know than myself, that Meyer and the athletic department had a huge falling out after the Smith incident which gave the school a black eye so to speak. The relationship was tainted and Meyer no longer felt at home. That may also be the reason why he looked so disengaged at times throughout the season.

Despite legit health reasons, Urban Meyer is 54 years young. Perhaps coaching college football isn’t what he wants anymore given his physical status.

When you’re a college coach, you work 24/7 all year long. NFL coaches average about two hours of sleep a night. But they don’t have to travel the country recruiting athletes. College coaches get a fresh batch of players every year, and the head coach is responsible for the well being of every player on the squad–not just the players, but the assistant coaches as well. Everything is on the shoulders of a high-profile college head coach.

On the collegiate level, you’re responsible for twice as many players as an NFL head coach–not to mention that college players are kids, just one or two years removed from high school. It is a tiring, taxing job. It gives me chest pains just thinking about it.

I doubt Urban Meyer has coached his last football game. Maybe he will go back to the NCAA. But my money is on the NFL. He’s already a college football god. The pro ranks would be a new challenge.

Hey, if Jim Harbaugh had success in the NFL, Urban Meyer can, too!

Consider these two options. Meyer stays in Ohio and becomes the messiah of the Cleveland Browns. Or how about Green Bay in lockstep with Aaron Rodgers?

Mike McCarthy and Hue Jackson both lost their jobs already this season, and more are coming–the Jets, Panthers, Falcons, Bucs, Jaguars, Dolphins, possibly Cardinals, and Cincinnati. I’m not saying every one of these jobs will be available, but I am saying this: if Urban wants to go to the NFL, they’ll be no shortage of head jobs available.

I think it won’t be long till we see this great football coach back on the sidelines. It will be Meyer meets the NFL.
