College Coaches On The Hotseat

, , ,

University administrators want to make sure their teams are on the right side of the ledger next year.

It’s that time of year again folks, complete with cold weather, the holidays, and playoff football. As some teams gear up for conference championships and bowl games, others look forward to next year.

Job security is a hard thing to come by in the FBS. That makes head coaching gigs among the hottest seats in college football.

Here are five coaches that I think are feeling especially hot these days.

Kliff Kingsbury, Texas Tech: The rumors picked up and, then, they don’t seem to be rumors now. Published reports say Kingsburg got the ax. Yes, Kingsbury has a terrific offensive mind, but he only won one bowl game in his six years in Lubbock.

Willie Taggart, FSU: Taggart’s inaugural season in Tallahassee has been, well, not good. High hopes went out the door early and the season ended 5-7. Without a bowl since 1976, FSU faithful (accustomed to being on the top of the heap) are left wondering what the future will bring.

Clay Helton, USC: I think Southern Cal will be ready to move in a different direction after initially liking what Helton brought to the program. Helton experienced yet another disappointing season (5-7)–without a bowl and with losses to rivals UCLA and Notre Dame.

Bill Snyder, Kansas State: I would write an entire article about Synder and K-State, but I won’t. Suffice it to say this: if Snyder continues to hold KSU hostage by not retiring, then the university needs to cut ties with him. No bowl this year, coupled with sub-par seasons in recent years, are the reasons. Athletic department: Push the reset button!

Larry Fedora, North Carolina: This is Fedora’s 7th season in Chapel Hill and his performance has been mediocre, at best. He has a .500 win percentage and the Tarheels were 3-9 last year and again in 2018.  I wouldn’t be surprised if this is Fedora’s last Fall wearing Carolina Blue.

___________

SCORECARD: Kingsbury fired, Helton retained, Fedora fired, Snyder retires, Taggart retained.
