New York Giants Have a NY ‘Giant’ Problem

It’s Code Red after Thursday Night’s 34-13 blowout by the Eagles.

The only way to capture the current state of the Giants’ football team is to ask: What the hell is going on?

For starters, the offensive line can’t block. Eli Manning has been chased, hit, and thrown to the ground. But the problems don’t end there. Eli hasn’t been very good even when he has time to throw. And the receiving corps isn’t very good either. Its star, Odell Beckham Jr., has been silenced–and not just by teams with great secondaries.

The only palpable offense is coming from rookie Saquon Barkley, who has been a terror for opposing defenses. Barkley has rushed for 100+ yards in five straight games. He has also scored 4 TDs.

Problems don’t end with the offense, though. New York’s defense is laughable. They don’t seem to be synchronized. Lifeless as a unit, they lack motivation, playing more as individuals than as a team.

With so many things needing to be changed, the question is where do you start? The first priority is probably the offensive line, but–and this is tough to say after all the Eli has done for New York–I also think it’s time for the Giants to get a new franchise QB.

Eli is 37 years old, in the second to last year of his contract. He seems to have lost the ability to throw accurately and hit targets. He has trouble moving to keep plays alive. And he throws into coverage way too much, especially when he’s under pressure.

I know from talking with Giants fans that they have mixed emotions when it comes to keeping Eli under center. But with the season on the brink–and a division that’s not very strong–at issue is what needs to be done now to make the Giants competitive.
