Learning From Week 1: NFL Fantasy Advice For Week 2

Week 1 had unexpected twists and turns.

Let’s talk about players and circumstances that surprised …but still shouldn’t influence us in making unnecessary moves, like picking up or dropping the wrong players.

Ryan Fitzpatrick: We’ve seen Fitzpatrick play past expectations when least expected … and vice versa. Not only are the Bucs up against a much better defense in Week 2, but Jameis Winston should be back in a few weeks anyway. So I wouldn’t bother picking up or starting ‘The Bearded One’ for Week 2.

Alfred Morris (photo, Niners Nation)

Alfred Morris: When Jerick McKinnon was injured before Week 1 (ending his season), it seemed clear that Alfred Morris would see the most running attempts. But in Week 1 we saw Alfred Morris and Matt Breida share the ball almost equally. They may be competing for the spot or we may even see a Coleman/Freeman-style approach coming from San Francisco this year. Either way, Week 2 is not a good time to start Morris and hope for the best. It would be better to bench him and keep an eye on the SF backfield in Week 2.

Deshaun Watson: if you started this guy last week, DON’T BE DISCOURAGED! I know New England’s secondary was one of the worst last year, but don’t forget that Watson averaged about 30 fantasy points a game before suffering last year’s season-ending injury. Here’s more good news: Will Fuller could be active for Week 2.

James Conner (photo, Yahoo! Sports)

James Conner: Another disappointing event in Week 1: Le’Veon Bell was still a no-show. He could retain that status for who knows how long. If you’re lucky, then James Connor might still be available in your league. Connor saw 31 touches for 135 yards, which was more than any other RB in Week 1! Pick up James and use him while you can … before Bell returns.

Quincy Enunwa: Sam Darnold, the new franchise quarterback in New York, favored a target during Monday’s blowout against the Lions. It was Quincy Enunwa, who was targeted 10 times. Terrelle Pryor had just three. Jermaine Kearse may be active Week 2. So, if you can afford it, I suggest picking up Enunwa (if he’s available) and then benching him this week–unless Kearse is still ruled out. If that’s the case, then start Enunwa for sure.
