The Kaizer Chiefs’ new slogan is “Driven to Excel!” But will they?
In South Africa’s Premier Soccer League, the Kaizer Chiefs have out-stretched their budget by roping in quality signings. Former Mamelodi Sundowns starman, Khama Billiat, was brought in together with this year’s CHAN player of the tournament, Andrianarimanan. Former Cape Town City star, Lebogang Manyama is the latest roster addition.
Signing big-name players is a huge change for the Chiefs. Over the past three years. Kaizer opted for free agents and injured players and results showed–the team went trophyless.
The Chiefs are the most successful team in South Africa, but you wouldn’t know that from the way Kaizer has conducted business in the past. The Mamelodi Sundowns were able to compete successfully as Kaizer fans became increasingly frustrated. Those bad attitudes reached a fever pitch last April when fans invaded the pitch and caused amok after the team’s Nedcup Cup semi-final loss to the Free State Stars. (Video courtesy of Times Live)
Will this season be different? There’s certainly hope because of the addition of star players. But there’s also an ironic twist of fate in terms of team management. Former Free State Stars coach, Giovanni Solinas, has taken over the Kaizer helm. Especially concerning is Solinas’ style of offense.
How is the team doing? The Chiefs are winless after four league games (three draws and a loss) and are positioned 13th in a 16-team league as of August 25.
On the bright side, Kaizer shut out Free State in a MTN 8 quarterfinal match. Kaizer now faces SuperSport United on Sunday in the first leg of competition’s semi-final round.
Will the MTN 8 be the start of something big? Will the star signings change Kaizer’s fortunes?
