2018 World Cup Cost These Players

, , ,

Yes, playing in the World Cup can help players’ careers. But playing sometimes comes at a cost.

#1 Manuel Neuer

For nearly a decade, FC Bayern’s Manuel Neuer has been regarded as the greatest goalkeeper in the world. But the entire team–including Neuer–is under scrutiny following Germany’s ouster in the 2018 Group Stage.

The 32-year-old seemed like a shadow of himself, especially in Germany’s final game against South Korea. Neuer was at fault for South Korea’s second goal and he looked unsettled and restless before then, including fumbling a shot that was hit straight at him.

With Manchester United’s David De Gea ascendence, coupled with Neuer’s World Cup 2018 performance, it’s safe to conclude that the veteran German is no longer at the top of his game.

#2 Raheem Sterling

The good news for Raheem Sterling (now that England is in the Knockout Round) is that he has time to turn around his World Cup performance. He’ll need that, too. By his own standards, the Manchester City forward has had a poor tournament.

In England’s opening game (Tunisia), Sterling missed several easy chances. And he didn’t influence the game during the Brit’s 6-1 thrashing of Panama.

If England’s fans are concerned, so is Real Madrid’s management. With rumors swirling that the team is interested in Sterling, at issue now is how a disappointing World Cup may affect team interest and price.

#3 Jerome Boateng

Another player of interest–this time by both Manchester clubs–is FC Bayern’s Jerome Boateng. Boateng has over 70 international caps to his name, plus a whole lot of silverware, which includes the 2014 World Cup. But one has to wonder how Boateng’s performance in WC ’18 will affect his marketability.

Things started badly when Boateng’s defensive squad was torn apart in the opening match against Mexico. But, then, Boateng’s tournament went from bad to worse. Sent off against Sweden, Boateng was suspended for what was to be Germany’s final game (and elimination) against South Korea.
