Who’ll Start At QB For Maryland?

Storyline: Three guys are battling in College Park for the starting QB spot. Two seem to stand out.

College football is almost here! Fall camp have begun around the country, and a big storyline out of the University of Maryland is the battle for starting quarterback.

At this point it looks like Perry Hills could be the front runner. But other guys could emerge. The biggest thing for the coaching staff is to find somebody who’ll be efficient and not turn over the ball.

Last year the Terps’ offense led the nation in a bad category–turnovers–with a season-high 36 turnovers. That helps explain why the season devolved to a 3-9 finish.

Leading the way down that negative road was Caleb Rowe, who only had a 46% completion rate and–get this!–15 interceptions. Rowe lacks good decision making and looks erratic at times. He also needs to learn how to slide down when plays break down.

So, from my point of view, the legitimate contender to Hills is true freshman, Tyrell Pigrome. Both Hill and Pigrome fit the fly-high, up-tempo, spread offence designed by OC Walt Bell. They both have athleticism with the ability to make plays with their legs.

I like Hills’s ability to throw the ball in tight windows and spots, where receivers can go up and get the ball. Pigrome’s deep ball stands out. He had good pocket presence in high school, too.

Botttom line: the QB race is heating up in College Park and DJ Durkin and his staff have to be smart about their pick.

May the best guy win the job!
