Manziel Experiment Could Open Soon In Dallas

Storyline: By no means would a move to “America’s Team” automatically cure what’s ailing Johnny. But Dallas may be just what this 23-year-old needs to recapture what is, so far, a failing NFL career. Written by Taylor Odenat. Follow Taylor at his blog.

Johnny Manziel, formerly ‘Money’ Manziel of Texas A&M fame, had an above-average college career, headlined by winning the 2012 Heisman Trophy. After waving off his junior season of college football, Manziel entered the 2014 NFL Draft. He was selected questionably by the Cleveland Browns with the 22nd pick of the 1st Round. Criticism started not long thereafter.

Widely regarded as immature off the field, some didn’t think he’d be able to make the transition to the NFL Even a teammate on the Browns, who spoke anonymously, said that his 2014 season was a “100% joke.” Manziel played seven quarters that season, finishing the year completing 18 of 35 passes with two interceptions.

Manziel hoped his sophomore campaign would be different. And the Browns had faith in Manziel, too, trusting that he would improve. Inevitably, though, trust eroded as Manziel continued his nightlife shenanigans. He seemed more dedicated to life after football than to his football career.

Manziel was given several opportunities to prove he could be “The Man” –the franchise quarterback that Cleveland so desperately needs. Following a injury to fellow quarterback, Josh McCown, Manziel was declared the indefinite starter, given the opportunity to convince his team and the NFL of his worth. However, instead of taking advantage of a valuable chance, Manziel was demoted to 3rd string after videos surfaced of him partying during a Bye Week. Once again, Manziel dropped the torch rather than run with it.

Make no mistake about it, Manziel is a terrific athlete–great on the run with a capable arm and large hands. Cleveland tried to help him become the kind of player they needed to have, the type of player who studies playbooks. But that’s not what happened. And, now, with a new coach, it may never happen.

But perhaps there is a team that fits Manziel’s personality mold: The Dallas Cowboys. The Cowboys are headed by owner, president, and general manager Jerry Jones, a known fan of Manziel. Jones is not one to avoid the spotlight and neither is Manziel. Johnny got months of media coverage before he entered the League and he didn’t mind that continuous attention.

Going to Dallas would definitely would put all eyes on Manziel. The  young QB has expressed interest in the organization, too. The Cowboys have a hole at quarterback position with Tony Romo’s injuries, which leaves Kellen Moore to lead the charge in times of need. Romo missed 12 games this past season, and he’s not getting younger or more durable.

‘Money’ Manziel has potential and upside. Is success a matter of getting him situated in the ‘right’ environment? By no means would a move to America’s Team automatically cure what’s ailing Johnny. But being in a situation with a GM who suits his needs could be just what this 23-year-old needs to recapture what is, so far, a failing NFL career.
